Hello, I’m Andrew Harrop.

Welcome to Cradle to Grave

This blog is my personal take on UK social policy from before birth to the end of life.

It looks at work, money and public services so expect posts on labour markets, education, pensions, social care, health, social security, public services, taxation, government and public finance. Plus the occasional thought on British politics as it connects to these issues.

About me

I’ve been reading, writing, thinking and speaking about UK public policy for the last 25 years.

I am currently a director at Public First working on issues including work, money and health. For fourteen years, from 2011 to 2024, I was general secretary of the Fabian Society, the centre-left UK think tank.

Prior to the 2024 election I carried out a review of adult social care policy for the Labour Party and I also used to be a member of the party’s joint policy committee. I write regularly for LabourList.

Before the Fabians I worked for Age UK, the New Policy Institute and a backbench Labour MP. I’ve also advised the aberdeen Financial Fairness Trust on pension reform and am a longstanding school governor.
